Quarters is a table game where players bounce a coin and try to land it in a cup. The basic rules are simple, but the game works best when the group agrees on turns, misses, and target rules before starting.
What do you need for Quarters?
You need a coin, a cup or clean target, and a table. Use a clean coin or a dedicated token, and avoid playing on fragile surfaces. If drinks are involved, use separate cups for gameplay and drinking.
How do you play Quarters?
- Place the target cup near the center of the table.
- The first player bounces the coin off the table toward the cup.
- If the coin lands in the cup, the player chooses the result for another player or keeps shooting, depending on house rules.
- If the player misses, the turn passes to the next player.
- Continue around the table.
What are common Quarters house rules?
Common rules include two misses then pass, make-it-and-keep-it, call your target, or special shots for bouncing from farther away. Some groups allow a player who makes three shots in a row to create a temporary table rule.
How do you make Quarters fair?
Keep the same shooting distance for everyone, clear the table around the cup, and decide whether rim hits count. If one player is much better than everyone else, use a rotation rule so they cannot control the whole game.
What are good non-drinking variants?
Use points instead of penalties. A made shot is one point, a called shot is two, and three points lets the player make a quick table rule. First to seven wins the round.
